Bierstadt: Animal Painter

Throughout his painting career, Bierstadt found inspiration in the animal kingdom. His sketches and observations of wildlife and domestic animals reveal his keen interest in the natural world.

Bierstadt’s landscapes often show myriad animals in the waterways, mountains, plains, and skies. In addition to American bison, Bierstadt portrayed seals, moose, pronghorn antelope, elk, mountain goats, and even prairie dogs.
