Frank Perley Fairbanks (1875-1939). An Apotheosis of A. Phimister Proctor, 1927. Oil on linen, 126.5 x 78.75 inches. Gift of Jonathan Fairbanks Richards in memory of Barbara Fairbanks Fite. 2.18

Fairbanks was a classmate of Proctor’s at the American Academy in Rome. This painting features Proctor’s family. The finished monument of Pioneer Mother is elevated atop a tall platform toward which Proctor ascends on a ladder. The sculpture is presented as Proctor’s crowning accomplishment, the “apotheosis” of his career. The plaster for Pioneer Mother is currently on display in the Proctor Studio.
