This painting, carrying the title of The Passing of a Penitente, was exhibited in 1935 in Sharp’s one-man exhibition, Hawaiian and Taos Paintings at The Kreimer & Brother Co. of Cincinnati.
A card on verso reads: "Penitentes Flagellation around the bier of a dead brother. Painted in the little chappel [sic] on our place. The Penitentes had the church for a number of years, then it went back to the Catholic Church, and I secured it from the Archbishop of Santa Fe. The candle sticks are the original Penitentes – J.H. Sharp"
