Penciled on dust cover: "Ceremonial Song Lesson Taos about 1920 Crucita and Black Deer wife and son of Bawling Deer (Now war chief)."
When this work was displayed at Sharp’s retrospective exhibition in 1949 at the Gilcrease Museum, it carried the title in the catalogue of Crucita and Bawling Deer, Taos Indians. The artist was said to have described the creative process involved and the juxtaposition of hues as follows: "In the method of the old masters, on white canvas, with white, black and venetian red, and colors glazed on."
