Penciled on verso: Chief Black Wolf - Gros Ventre. Inscribed on paper attached to verso: Chief Black Wolf 1898- 1900 Gros Ventre - A diplomatic and refined face. Tho a warrior and scout - His war shirt similar to Blackfeet - lived with and associated with them.

 

It is not known when Sharp visited the Gros Ventre Indians, but probably around 1905 when this portrait's style and signature type would relate.
